How do assessors differentiate natural confidence and overconfidence in SSB candidates?

Assessors distinguish natural confidence and overconfidence through behavior, consistency, and group interaction. Natural confidence shows clarity, composure, honesty, and cooperation across all tests, while overconfidence appears as dominance, exaggeration, rigidity, and poor teamwork. Consistency in actions and a positive impact on the group indicate genuine confidence, whereas inconsistency and self-centered behavior reveal overconfidence.

How do assessors differentiate natural confidence and overconfidence in SSB candidates?

Confidence is one of the most visible characteristics of SSB candidates. However, if we had to look at it from the assessor’s point of view, I would say that there’s a big difference between natural confidence and overconfidence. Confidence equates to clarity, balance, and self-assurance. Overconfidence equates to rigidity, exaggeration, and lack of regard for others. The SSB process allows the assessors to see the candidates in various situations. This helps them to differentiate natural confidence from overconfidence.

What natural confidence looks like

Natural confidence is neither loud nor boisterous. Instead, it’s reflected through clarity of thought, composure of conduct, and steadiness of character. What natural confidence equates to

Candidates with natural confidence:

Do not talk in an unclear manner with frequent hesitations

Do not have problems admitting their strengths and weaknesses

Do not get flustered under pressure

Do listen to others and respond appropriately

Do accept responsibility without needing to seek attention

They do not constantly seek to prove themselves. They do not change their behavior under various psychological tests, GTOs, and the personal interview.

What overconfidence looks like

Overconfidence equates to the need to impress rather than express.

Assessors look out for overconfidence in SSB candidates through:

Interrupting others in a group discussion

Showing lack of regard for others’ opinions

Giving answers that are either too high or too low

Showing lack of willingness to accept feedback

Trying to control situations unnecessarily

Overconfidence may appear like assertiveness at first. However, over time, it reveals itself to be lack of adaptability and poor group dynamics. This is not desired in an officer.

Role of consistency in identifying the difference

For example:

A naturally confident person would display similar traits during the interview, psychology tests, and group work
Overconfident persons might display high performance in speaking tests but low cooperation during group work
The claims made during the interview may not correspond with the performance during the GTO tests

These inconsistencies would indicate whether the person is genuinely or superficially confident.

Behaviour during group tasks, work as a major indicator

GTO tests offer one of the greatest differences.

Naturally Confident persons would display:
Meaningful contributions
Cooperation
Assistance to the group
Composure during conflicts

Overconfident persons would display:
Dominance of group work
Self-centeredness
Lack of coordination
Impatience

Assessors closely watch whether the presence of the candidate has a positive or negative effect on the group work.

Reactions to questions during the interview

The personal interview offers another opportunity to judge the candidates.

Naturally Confident persons would display:
Direct and honest answers
Willingness to admit when they do not know
Composure during cross-questioning

Overconfident persons would display:
Eagerness to respond to everything
Vagueness and exaggeration
Defensiveness during cross-questioning

The ability to say “I don’t know” with clear understanding demonstrates more confidence than attempting to say something wrong.

Indicators of natural confidence during psychological tests

During the psychological tests, some differences are also visible.

Naturally Confident persons would display:
Realistic answers
Practical approach
Stability of emotions

Overconfident persons would display:
Unrealistic answers
Lack of acknowledgment of problems
Forced positivity

These repeated displays of behaviour would help psychologists identify the traits of the person.

Why overconfidence is viewed negatively

In the army, leadership skills are all about coordinating teams, being flexible, and being responsible.

The consequences of overconfidence are:

Poor decisions
Lack of cooperation from teams
Ignoring ground realities
Poor team performance

So, assessors are very careful when dealing with candidates who are too dominating.

How to develop natural confidence

Natural confidence does not come from pretending or rehearsing; it comes from self-understanding and actual experiences.

The focus should be on:

Self-understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses
Gaining actual experience through teams
Improving thought processes
Developing honest communication skills
Being responsible in actual situations

Confidence built on actual experiences will be reflected naturally through all stages of SSB.

A balanced approach towards personality development, with proper feedback and actual practice, will ensure that candidates work on their confidence without moving into overconfidence. Proper mentoring through SSBwithISV will ensure that candidates achieve clarity, composure, and behavioral balance, thus being able to showcase their natural confidence through all stages of SSB.
