How to prepare for the personal interview in the SSB the right way

Bharatiya Vayu Sena

The personal interview in the SSB selection procedure is a structured interview intended to assess the background, personality, decision-taking ability, and overall aptitude of the candidate for a career in the defense forces. Unlike other interviews, the questions asked here are not restricted to academic knowledge.

From the point of view of the assessors, the interview is intended to test the genuineness, consistency, and practicality of the personality traits identified in the psychological tests and GTO tests.

It is the candidates’ clarity, truthfulness, and proper preparation based on self-knowledge that help them perform the interview in the best possible way.

Understanding the purpose of the interview

It is not the Interviewing Officer’s (IO) concern to test the candidate’s knowledge or memory. The purpose of the interview is to assess:

  • Lifestyle and routine
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Decision-taking ability
  • Social habits
  • Awareness of surroundings and current events

Most of the questions asked during the interview are based on the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ), which includes questions related to education, family, achievements, hobbies, and responsibilities.

The interview is actually a discussion about yourself, not a Q&A session.

Preparing for the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ)

The PIQ form is the base of the entire interview. Every aspect of the candidate’s life, as described in the form, can be discussed in great detail.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that they:

  • Understand everything they have filled in the form
  • Are ready to explain everything they have filled in the form
  • Are prepared for follow-up questions

For example, the IO might ask questions like the level of participation, the role they played in the team, and the challenges they faced while participating in sports, as mentioned in the form.
Lessons learned

Lack of clarity or consistency in the PIQ-based responses is quickly picked up and affects the overall evaluation.

Focus on self-awareness

Self-awareness is one of the most important qualities to be evaluated through the personal interview.

The candidates need to be able to respond to questions such as:

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What improvements have you brought in yourself?
  • How do you think others see you?

It is not necessary to be perfect; it is necessary to show a willingness to improve and be honest about yourself.

It is always better to be aware of your strengths as well as weaknesses; otherwise, you are not considered trainable.

Develop clarity of thought

The personal interview includes general questions, situation-based questions, and opinion-based questions.

The candidates need to be able to:

  • Think before responding to the questions
  • Respond to the questions in a structured and logical manner
  • Not make vague or exaggerated statements

Clarity of thought is reflected when:

  • The candidates explain the situation step by step
  • The candidates justify their decisions logically
  • The candidates show consistency in their responses

If the responses are not clear and show a lack of clarity of thought, then such candidates are not preferred.

Be honest and natural

Authenticity is one of the key requirements to be fulfilled during the SSB interview.

It is always better to be honest and not try to be perfect or to show ideal responses to the interviewers; otherwise, the interviewers will pick up on this and ask probing questions to test the candidates' responses.

Common mistakes:

Exaggerations of their qualities and experiences
Exaggerations of their daily routine
Exaggerations of their qualities

It is always best to be honest and show real-life experiences to get through the interview.

Improve communication skills

The personal interview needs to be conducted in a clear and composed manner.

The candidates need to be able to:

  • Speak clearly at a steady pace
  • Organization of thought before answering
  • Maintaining confidence and composure
  • Listening properly to each question

Effective communication is a reflection of clear thinking and confidence—essential qualities of an officer.

Prepare for rapid fire questions

One of the major characteristics of SSB interviews is the rapid fire sequence of questions.

The candidates are expected to:

  • Listen properly
  • Remember all the questions
  • Answer them in the correct sequence
  • Maintain composure

Preparation for rapid fire questions requires structured answering and memory power while maintaining a calm attitude.

Build your awareness of surroundings

The candidates are expected to answer questions related to:
Current affairs
General awareness
Knowledge of their own state, district, and background

Knowledge of general awareness and of the happenings around the country, along with awareness of one’s own surroundings, reflects the candidate’s level of alertness and responsibility.

Maintain consistency with other tests

The personal interview is closely related to other tests of the SSB.

The Interviewing Officer cross-verifies the answers of the candidates with:
The outputs of the Psychological tests
Behavioral patterns of the candidates during the Group tests

For example:
If a candidate has demonstrated responsibility during the Psychological tests, the same should reflect in the answers during the interview
Similarly, leadership qualities demonstrated during group tests should also be supported by real-life examples

Practice with the right guidance

Preparation for the personal interview requires a structured approach.

Candidates can get the right guidance from:
Mock personal interviews
Practice with PIQ-based questions
Practice of communication skills
Knowledge of general interview patterns

The right approach under the guidance of experienced mentors at SSBwithISV can help candidates develop their personalities and ensure a clear approach while answering questions while also being able to maintain consistency while answering questions during the personal interview.
