The Services Selection Board (SSB) evaluates candidates based on a set of personality traits known as Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). These qualities represent the behavioural attributes expected from officers in the Indian Armed Forces. Understanding OLQs is essential for anyone preparing for the SSB interview, as these traits form the foundation of the entire assessment process. In a nutshell, OLQs are nothing but a method to interpret one’s personality just as MBTI/Big Five O et.al. are tests to find one’s personality type.
The Armed Forces require leaders who can make decisions under pressure, inspire teams, and take responsibility during challenging situations. The SSB interview is designed to identify candidates who naturally display these qualities, are trainable and have potential to discharge under pressure in VUCA (Volatile_Uncertain_Complex_Ambiguous) situations. Rather than testing academic knowledge, the selection process focuses on behavioural traits and personality characteristics.
The 15 Officer Like Qualities are grouped into four factors.
This factor is centered around planning and organising skills. These qualities relate to how candidates analyze situations and make decisions.
They include:
• Effective intelligence
• Reasoning ability
• Organizing ability
• Power of expression
This factor focuses on how candidates interact with others.
It includes:
• Social adaptability
• Cooperation
• Sense of responsibility
This factor reflect a candidate’s ability to lead, influence and motivate others. These are basically leadership traits.
They include:
• Initiative
• Self confidence
• Speed of decision
• Ability to influence the group
• Liveliness
The factor reflects a candidate’s inner strength and determination.
These include:
• Determination
• Courage
• Stamina (Mental and Physical)
All these qualities are essential for military leadership.
The SSB selection board evaluates shades of OLQs across multiple tests.
For example:
• Psychological tests evaluate thinking patterns
• Group tasks reveals group effectiveness and team dynamics. They confirm social interactions and leadership behaviour
• Interviews assess confidence, clarity of thought etc.
Candidates who consistently demonstrate these qualities across all tests and tasks are more likely to be recommended.
OLQs are not developed overnight.
They grow through:
• leadership experiences
• teamwork
• sports
• responsibility
• self-awareness
Structured SSB mentoring programs often include exercises designed to help candidates understand and develop these qualities naturally.
If you want to understand how OLQs are evaluated in detail, explore the SSB training modules in our courses, where each quality is explained through practical examples and exercises.
